Mississippi Mills was incorporated on January 1, 1998, when the Town of Almonte and the Townships of Pakenham and Ramsay merged into a single municipality in Lanark County. The Mississippi River runs through the town's territory, and many of its communities grew up directly on its banks to harness water power for the mills that gave the town its name.
Fourteen named communities make up Mississippi Mills, among them Almonte, Pakenham, Appleton, Clayton, Blakeney, and Union Hall. Pakenham is home to the only five-arch stone bridge in North America, built in 1901 across the Mississippi River, while Almonte's former mill buildings still anchor its historic downtown along the river.
Bordering Carleton Place and within commuting distance of Ottawa, Mississippi Mills draws residents who want small-town and riverside living without giving up a realistic connection to the capital. The town's mix of river valley and surrounding farmland gives it a distinct identity within Lanark County.
Housing ranges from historic stone and brick homes in Almonte's downtown to newer builds in Pakenham and the surrounding rural communities. Deb Driscoll, Jaime Peca, and Luke Geleynse work with buyers across Mississippi Mills and can help you navigate what's currently available, from riverside heritage homes to rural properties, within reach of both Carleton Place and Ottawa.
