Athens

Athens sits in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, roughly 25 kilometres north of the St. Lawrence River and a short drive west of Brockville. Originally settled in 1792 by United Empire Loyalist Benoni Wiltse and renamed from Farmersville in 1888 after developing into an education hub with a grammar school, model teacher training school, and high school, the township carries that small town history into its present day core.

The current Township of Athens took shape on January 1, 2001, when the Township of Rear of Yonge and Escott merged with the former Village of Athens. It now encompasses a scattering of smaller communities beyond the village itself, including Anoma Lea, Beales Mills, Charleston, Glen Elbe, Glen Morris, Hayes Corners, and Wiltsetown, with the township's administrative offices based in Athens.

At roughly 130 square kilometres, Athens Township remains a low density, rural community, with its village core surrounded by farmland and forest typical of Leeds and Grenville. Its position between Brockville and the Rideau Lakes region places it within reach of both St. Lawrence River communities and the lake country to the north.
