Almonte sits on the Mississippi River within the Town of Mississippi Mills, first settled in 1819 by David Shepherd. The community went through several names, including Shepherd's Falls, Shipman's Mills, Ramsayville, Victoriaville, and Waterford, before adopting its current name in 1859 in honour of General Juan Almonte, Mexico's ambassador to the United States at the time.
Textile milling shaped the town's growth through the late nineteenth century, with several woollen mills operating in Almonte by the turn of the century and remaining central to its economy into the 1950s. That history is preserved today at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, housed in a former mill building overlooking Grand Falls on the Mississippi River.
The Almonte Riverwalk follows the river past Grand Falls and the town's historic downtown, while the nearby Mill of Kintail Conservation Area holds the R. Tait McKenzie Museum and the Dr. James Naismith Museum, tied to the area's connection to the inventor of basketball. Downtown Almonte's stone and brick storefronts reflect that same mill era architecture, now home to shops, galleries, and studios linked to the area's textile and craft heritage.
Housing in Almonte ranges from historic stone and brick homes near the downtown core to newer residential streets on the town's outskirts. Deb Driscoll, Jaime Peca, and Luke Geleynse work with buyers across Almonte and can help you navigate what's currently available, from riverside heritage homes to newer builds, within the broader Mississippi Mills market.
