Lanark Highlands took its current shape through a series of mergers in 1997, when the United Township of Lavant, Dalhousie and North Sherbrooke joined with the Township of Lanark and the Village of Lanark to form North West Lanark, which then merged with Darling Township to create the township as it exists today. Lanark village serves as the administrative centre, with its stone mill buildings still marking the downtown core.
The township spreads across roughly 35 communities and hamlets, including McDonalds Corners, Elphin, Clyde Forks, Watsons Corners, and the ghost town of Herron's Mills, scattered across Canadian Shield terrain far more rugged than the farmland further south in Lanark County. Marble mines near Tatlock and lakes including Dalhousie Lake and Joes Lake round out a landscape built around granite ridges, forest, and water rather than open fields.
At just over 1,000 square kilometres, Lanark Highlands is among the largest and most sparsely populated municipalities in Lanark County, giving residents a genuine sense of backcountry space uncommon closer to Perth or Ottawa.
Housing ranges from village homes in Lanark to rural properties and lakefront cottages scattered throughout the township's hamlets. Deb Driscoll, Jaime Peca, and Luke Geleynse work with buyers across Lanark Highlands and can help you navigate what's currently available, from lakefront cottages to Canadian Shield acreage, in one of Lanark County's most rural corners.
