Frontenac County

Frontenac County sits in Eastern Ontario immediately north of the City of Kingston, made up of four townships: South Frontenac, Central Frontenac, North Frontenac, and Frontenac Islands. Long nicknamed the "County of a Thousand Lakes," the region sits on the edge of the Canadian Shield, where granite outcrops and dense forest give way to hundreds of lakes and waterways. Kingston remains a separate municipality but functions as the county's main hub for hospitals, VIA Rail service, and access to Highway 401.

The county's character shifts the farther north you travel. South Frontenac, closest to Kingston along Highway 38, includes villages such as Sydenham, Harrowsmith, Verona, Inverary, and Battersea, with lakes like Bobs Lake, Buck Lake, and Lake Opinicon shaping the local landscape. Central and North Frontenac, anchored by communities such as Sharbot Lake and Parham, are more remote and recreational in character, bordering Frontenac Provincial Park and threaded by the K&P Trail, a rail-to-recreation corridor for cycling and hiking. Frontenac Islands, reached by ferry, includes Wolfe Island and Howe Island in the St. Lawrence River.

Distances to daily conveniences vary by township. South Frontenac residents can reach downtown Kingston in roughly twenty to thirty minutes, keeping urban amenities within easy commuting range while living on acreage or waterfront lots. Central and North Frontenac trade that proximity for larger properties, quieter roads, and direct access to Crown land and provincial park trails, with Kingston still reachable within forty five minutes to an hour for most residents.
